Abella

Abella (also also known as Abella of Salerno, Abella Castellomata) was a mid-twelfth century physician. 1. Abella learned and taught at Salerno School of Medicine. Salerno School of Medicine. Abella was born circa 1380. The exact date and date at which she passed away is not yet known. (2) Abella lectured on standard medical practice, bile as well as women's health and the natural world at the medical institute in Salerno. Abella was a specialist in embryology as well as Rebecca de Guarna. De natura seminis (on the nature of the seminal fluid) was her second of published treatises. Salvatore De Renzi, a 19th-century historian from the Salerno School of Medicine, mentions Abella among four women, together with Rebecca de Guarna, Mercuriade and Constance Calenda. They were all known for being able to lecture in medicine as well as writing treatises. These characteristics were a factor in putting Abella within a category that was known as the Mulieres Salernitanae or women of Salerno
