Martinez's prior position was Director for Safety Training and Compliance, Transmission & Distribution. Before that, he was director for Safety and Compliance for Power Supply and Operational Services. Over the 30-year period that he was at SCE, Martinez was in a variety of management positions in programs that aimed at improving performance and remedial actions. These included positions at the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station SONGS that focused on the protection of both employees and the public.
